Document the pattern
Photograph the full crack and the nearby ceiling, corner, doorway or window. Say when it appeared, whether it changes and what previous repair was attempted. An isolated surface mark, a line along a board joint and a crack at a change in construction are different observations. Describing the pattern helps the contractor decide what needs inspection; photographs alone do not provide a structural diagnosis.
Separate investigation from decoration
Ask the contractor to distinguish the visible finish work from any underlying condition that needs another professional or trade. Movement, loose material or unresolved moisture can affect the repair plan. If the substrate continues to change, a fresh surface coat may simply conceal the symptom temporarily. Avoid treating a cosmetic quote as a guarantee that building movement or a recurring leak has been corrected.
Define joint treatment and finish
Once the condition is understood, the repair scope can identify preparation, any required reinforcement or replacement, finishing and decoration. A broader blend area may be needed around the original line. Ask how the repair will meet the existing texture and whether a whole wall or ceiling needs repainting for a consistent appearance. Product choice, drying and finishing follow the selected system and site conditions.
Keep a useful repair record
Keep dated photographs and note the work completed. If a line returns, that history is more useful than repeated filling without context. For strata and rental work, identify who approves investigation and any wider work before opening the assembly. If another specialist is required, agree the sequence before the drywall surface is closed. Final scope should state what was repaired and what remains outside the contractor's work.
Before you request a repair
Send the project city, a wide room photograph, close-ups, approximate dimensions and the cause of the damage. Identify the existing finish, known assembly requirements and the intended repaint boundary. Explain what another trade has completed and any access restrictions.
